Authenticity/Forgeries

The one question I had when I bought my first autograph and the  number one question I've heard frequently over the last 25 years is "How  do you know it's real?" 

First of all you need an extensive library of  reference material, years of practical experience of handling thousands  of documents, and some other tools used in the autograph trade. 

My  approach has always been to assume that an item is not real and then I  work backwards, step by step, through multiple reference books, using a  working knowledge of paper, ink, printing techniques, specific facts  known about a personalities signing habits, and a centuries accumulation of files of exemplars to use for comparison.
