WILLIAM WATSON GOODWIN (1831-1912) HANDWRITTEN CARD SIGNED & HANDWRITTEN RALPH WALDO EMERSON QUOTE, “Yours very truly/W. W. Goodwin”, on a card 4 x 2.75, June 3, 1907, by the American classical scholar, Eliot Professor of Greek at Harvard (1860-1901), and author of several textbooks and references. He was twice president of the American Philological Association (1872 & 1885). His handwritten card, in full: “Dear Sir, I received your letter a week ago in Virginia, from which I have just returned. Please pardon my delay in answering.” On a separate card, 4.5 x 3, also dated June 3, 1907, Cambridge, Mass., he has handwritten an Emerson quote, in full: “The hand that rounded Peter’s dome,/And groined the aisles of Christian Rome,/Wrought in a sad sincerity;/Himself from God he could not free;/He builded better than he knew;-/The conscious stone to beauty grew.” The quote is probably referring to the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican and is an appropriate quote by a famous classical scholar. Both cards are in good condition and are mounted together on an archival backing but can be easily separated if desired.
