FRANCIS WAYLAND (1796-1865) SIGNED SLIP, “Believe me yours truly, F. Wayland”, on a slip 3 x 1.75, by the American Baptist minister, educator, economist, and text book author (on ethics, moral and intellectual philosophy, and political economy). He was President of Brown University (1827-55) and pastor of the First Baptist Church in America in Providence, Rhode Island (1857-58). He was an early advocate of the temperance and anti-slavery causes, active in prison reform, and a vocal advocate for libraries. He also advocated for the expansion of the public school system. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
