Description
VIKTOR STRETTI TWICE-SIGNED LITHOGRAPH, "Viktor Stretti, p.f. 1950", in plate and in pencil, 8 x 6, showing an image of a lithographer at work, 1950. In fine condition.
Viktor Stretti (1878-1957) was a well-known Czech graphic artist, painter and illustrator, famous for his etchings and lithographs from old Prague. PF, also called novorocenka or New Year's card. In short, it's a stand-in for "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" and is solely a Czech (and Slovak) tradition. It is derived from the French pour feliciter (felicitations) and abbreviated as "PF" followed by the forthcoming year. Stretti was known for the custom of sending his own lithographic creations as New Year Congratulations and PF to close friends. This is an especially rare Stretti lithograph, not of his usual Prague scenes but instead showing the artist busy at work.
