THORVALDUR THORODDSEN (1855-1921) SIGNED QUOTE IN ENGLISH & ICELANDIC, “February 16, 1909/Th. Thoroddsen”, on a card 4.5 x 3, by the Icelandic naturalist, geologist and geographer who was a professor at the University of Copenhagen. He was attracted to the nature of Iceland’s large uninhabited areas and resolved to investigate the nature of the island, especially its geology which up till then had been sparsely mapped and studied. From 1881-98 he undertook expeditions to gather data and in 1901 he published a geological map of Iceland that greatly updated an earlier attempt by another geographer, Bjorn Gunnlaugsson. The American Geographical Society awarded Thoroddsen a medal for his work. His handwritten quote is in both English and Icelandic: “Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, is our destined end or way; But to act, that each to-morrow find us farther than to-day.” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
