$275.00

Description

IN 1857 HE INVENTED AN INK TO FIGHT COUNTERFEITING THAT ENDED UP BEING USED ON VARIOUS BANK NOTES, INCLUDING THE U.S. GOVERNMENTS CIVIL WAR BANK NOTES, WHICH WAS THE ORIGIN OF THE TERM GREENBACKS (1860’S MONEY). AND HE FIRST PROPOSED THE THEORY WHICH LINKED CLIMATE CHANGE TO CONCENTRATIONS OF CARBON DIOXIDE IN THE ATMOSPHERE.

THOMAS STERRY HUNT (1826-92) SIGNED CARD, “T. Sterry Hunt, Boston, Mass.”, on a card 5 x 1.75, by the American geologist and chemist who in 1847 was appointed chemist to the Canadian Geological Survey. He was one of the original members and president of the Royal Society of Canada. In 1872 he became professor of geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In an 1863 submission to the American Journal of Science and Arts he first proposed the theory which linked climate change from the Carboniferous to the modern age to concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The card has a very large and bold signature and is in excellent condition, with minor age toning.
