$200.00

Description

NOTHING LESS WOULD BE EXPECTED FROM THE AMERICAN LITERARY HISTORIAN AND CRITIC THAN THE WORDS HANDWRITTEN HERE IN REFERENCE TO A POEM WRITTEN BY TWO BRITISH STATESMEN, FUTURE PRIME MINISTER GEORGE CANNING (1770-1827) & ENGLISH DIPLOMAT AND AUTHOR, JOHN HOOKHAM FRERE, IN IMMITATION OF POETIC STYLE USED BY THE FUTURE POET LAUREATE, ROBERT SOUTHEY: “I GIVE YOU A SENTIMENT! I WILL SEE YOU DAMNED FIRST.”

THOMAS RAYNESFORD LOUNSBURY (1838-1915) HANDWRITTEN NOTE SIGNED, “Thos. R. Lounsbury”, on a card 4.5 x 3, by the American literary historian and critic who was a professor of English language and literature at Yale. It is as a student of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and of the English language from the point of view of its development that he especially distinguished himself. Professor Lounsbury wrote many publications, including: the three-volume Studies in Chaucer (1891), Shakespeare as a Dramatic Artist, The Standard of Usage in English, and many other titles. His handwritten note, in full: “An autograph is easy to send, but a sentiment I have none to give. In regard to that I can only repeat with a slight sanitation of the words of the Friend of Humanity to the Needy Knife-grinder in Canning and Frere’s imitation of Southey’s sapphies. “I give you a sentiment! I will see you damned first.” The literary reference was, according to The Literary Encyclopedia, written by George Canning (1770-1827) and John Hookham Frere (1769-1846), as a parody of Robert Southey’s poem “The Widow”, and, more broadly, a satire on the poetry, principles and motives of British radicals in the 1790s. The poem was published on November 27th, 1797, in the second issue of Canning’s uncompromisingly conservative weekly magazine, The Anti-Jacobin, or Weekly Examiner. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
