Stephen Longfellow (1776 – 1849) Handwritten Letter Signed, "S. Longfellow", 8 x 9.25, 1 pg. with attached address panel, postmarked July 2 [1825], Portland [ME], In part: "...We have no branch of the U.S. Bank in this State...I have obtained and enclose to you a check...drawn by Jos: Swift of the Cumberland on the U.S. Bank at Philadelphia...This is the full amount of money received by me of the Clerk of the District Court for this district in the case U.S. against the Brig Hollis & Cargo...in conformity to the instructions of Thos. C. Bitten and your letter of June of 1825...the Cumberland Bank is the Bank in which the deposits of the United States are made in this place....a line from you acknowledging the receipt of the above....", by the U. S. Representative from Maine (1823-25), judge, lawyer, father of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, overseer and trustee of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and President of the Maine Historical Society. Heavy age toning and staining, opening tear at address panel seal, and usual letter folds, otherwise the writing is dark and easily readable.
