Interesting early 19th century legal case being heard in Boston court by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's father

Stephen Longfellow (1776 –1849) Handwritten Letter Signed, "S. Longfellow", 8 x 9.75, 2 pgs back to back, with attached address panel, postmarked Nov 18 [1818], Portland [ME], In part: "...I have this moment received a letter from W. Prescott, whom I employed to attend to Ogden...appeal in the Circuit Court in Boston, informing me that the court had dismissed the appeal for want of jurisdiction - The reasons assigned by judge Story will appear in the inclosed...from his opinion - Thinking that it would be unavailing W. Prescott has not yet claimed an appeal, but the court is adjourned to the first of December, and the appeal can then be claimed, if the petitioners should think it advisable...P. S. W. Prescott says in his letter to me that 'judge Story stated very fully in his opinion that if the petition would be sustained it would not avail...the whole court was of opinion....", by the U. S. Representative from Maine (1823-25), judge, lawyer, father of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, overseer and trustee of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and President of the Maine Historical Society. In fine condition, with minor age toning. opening tear at address panel seal, and usual letter folds.
