$675.00

Description

STARR WOOD (1870-1944) SIGNED ORIGINAL PENCIL, PEN, BLACK INK PUNCH MAGAZINE GAG CARTOON, “Starr Wood,” 10 x 12.5, on heavy card stock, January 11, 1922, by 19th-early 20th century British Punch cartoonist. This cartoon shows two different class of men in a bar.  Wood's handwritten caption (the publisher would later set it in type) reads: “Aint yer got a tongue in yer ‘ead? I arst your opinion of the gover’met and all you do is to sniff.” Wood was having trouble deciding on which political description to use (the publisher finally chose gover’met over House o Lords, etc.). His backstamp lists his address, copyright, terms of sale and return of the original art. There are a few publisher/printer notations in pencil, general age toning, a few stains not affecting the image, otherwise in fine condition. This original cartoon comes with a copy of the page where the cartoon actually appeared in Punch Magazine. Some collectors mat around the main image area to highlight the original artwork while other collectors like to frame the piece, as is, to show the various stages the original art went through at the publishers.

STARR WOOD turned freelance cartoonist after his first drawing was published in 1892. In addition to his Punch cartoons he contributed to several other British publications, including: Chums, Fun, Judy, Chips, Parade, John Bull, Bystander, Humorist, Passing Show, Tatler and Strand from 1898-1935.
