SPENCER FULLERTON BAIRD (1823-87) SIGNED CARD, “Spencer F. Baird, Nov. 24, 1880”, on a card 3.5 x 2.25, by the American naturalist, collector, ornithologist, ichthyologist, herpetologist, the first curator (1850) and later the second Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1878-87), prolific author of over 1000 works. Ulysses S. Grant appointed him the first Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries for the United States Fish Commission and was highly active in developing fishing and fishery policies for the United States, and was shortly after he founded Wood’s Hole and was instrumental in making it the research venue it is today. The card is partly printed with “Secretary Smithsonian Institution”, hand-signed and dated, and is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
