THE CAMBRIDGE PROFESSOR AND ROYAL ASTRONOMER OF IRELAND BECAME CELEBRATED FOR HIS OVER 2500 POPULAR LECTURES ON SCIENCE IN TOWNS AND CITIES ACROSS BRITAIN AND IRELAND

ROBERT STAWELL BALL (1840-1913) SIGNED CARD, “Yours truly, Robert S. Ball”, on a card 4 x 1.5, by the Irish mathematician who founded the algebraic calculation known as the screw theory and who as Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Royal College of Science in Dublin, where he lectured on mechanics, an area of mathematics and physics concerned with the motions of physical objects that result in displacements, or changes of an objects position relative to its environment. He was also the Royal Astronomer of Ireland.  He wrote several astronomy books: Time and Tide: a Romance of the Moon (1889) and An Atlas of Astronomy (1892) and was appointed Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at Cambridge University and at the same time becoming director of the Cambridge Observatory. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
