Description

Sir Robert Helpmann CBE (9 April 1909 – 28 September 1986) signed matte-finish photograph, B/W, 4.25 x 6.25, by Buper in London, a close-up portrait in ballet costume. In fine condition.                                                                                                                                                                          Helpmann was an Australian dancer, actor, theatre director and choreographer. In 1926 he joined the touring dance company of the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. Soon he was the principal dancer with Vic-Wells Ballet and formed a professional partnership with Dame Margot Fonteyn. The highpoint of Helpmann’s career as adancer was the ballet tour of the United States in 1949, with Fonteyn and Helpmann dancing the leading roles in the “The Sleeping Beauty.” The production caused a sensation and eventually would open doors for him in the United States as an actor and director. He appeared in many films. In 1965 he became co-director of the Australian Ballet. In 1981 he worked with the Australian Opera directing Alcina by Handel.   $100  #10530
