Description

SIR JOHN LUBBOCK, LORD AVEBURY (1834-1913) SIGNED SHAKESPEARE QUOTE, “Lord Avebury”, by the English banker, liberal politician, philanthropist, scientist, and polymath who made significant contributions in archaeology, ethnography, and several branches of biology. He coined the terms “Paleolithic” and “Neolithic” to denote the old and new stone ages. He helped establish archaeology as a scientific discipline and was influential in debates concerning evolutionary theory. He introduced the first law to protect the United Kingdoms archaeological and architectural heritage. As a youth he developed a close friendship with his neighbor Charles Darwin who stimulated his passion for science and evolutionary theory. In 1852 he assisted Darwin’s research by examining and illustrating barnacles. As a Member of Parliament he promoted the study of science in primary and secondary schools and encouraged the protection of ancient monuments. He was an amateur biologist of some distinction and a prolific author who wrote many books on scientific topics, including one on Ants, Bees, and Wasps. His handwritten quote is from Shakespeare’s Richard II, in full: “All places that the eye of heaven visits/Are to the wise man ports and happy havens.” In fine condition, with minor age toning, and dated 1904 in another hand lower left.
