FAMOUS SCOTTISH GEOLOGIST QUOTES SHAKESPEARE’S WORDS OF WISDOM: “I HOLD THE WORLD BUT AS THE WORLD…A STATE, WHERE EVERY MAN MUST PLAY HIS PART”

SIR ARCHIBALD GEIKIE (1835-1924) SIGNED SHAKESPEARE QUOTE, “Arch. Geikie, 7 June 1904”, on a card 5 x 3 with a small photo attached, by the Scottish geologist and author who, in 1867, was appointed Director of the British Geological Survey for Scotland; in 1871, the Chair of the Murchison professorship of geology and mineralogy at the University of Edinburgh; in 1881 he became Director General of the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom and Director of the Museum of Practical Geology, London. A feature of his tenure of office was the emphasis given to microscopic petrography that focuses on the detailed descriptions of rocks. From the outset of his career he took a keen interest in volcanic geology and obtained valuable data on his expeditions to the volcanic regions of Wyoming, Montana, and Utah in the United States. The results of these researches were published in several books: Geological Sketch at Home and Abroad (1882) and The Ancient Volcanoes of Great Britain (1897). He was a prolific scientific author, wrote several biographies, and his book Founders of Geology consists of the inaugural course of lectures given in 1897 at John Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. He received a knighthood in 1891 and was elected President of the Royal Society (1909). His handwritten quote is from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, in full: “I hold the world but as the world, Gratiano; A stage, where every man must play his part.” In fine condition, with minor age toning.
