SIR ARCHIBALD GEIKIE (1835-1924) SIGNED GEOLOGICAL SURVEY CARD“Arch. Geikie/Geological Survey/28 Jermyn St. London S.W./12 July 1902”, on a card 5 x3, with printed "Received from the Maryland Geological Survey Vol 4,M.G.S." which was published by Johns Hopkins Press, 1902 and covered" Report on the Clays of Maryland", by the Scottish geologist and author who, in 1867, was appointed Director of the British Geological Survey for Scotland; in 1871, the Chair of the Murchison professorship of geology and mineralogy at the University of Edinburgh; in1881 he became Director General of the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom and Director of the Museum of Practical Geology, London. A feature of his tenure of office was the emphasis given to microscopic petrography that focuses on the detailed descriptions of rocks. From the outset of his career he took a keen interest in volcanic geology and obtained valuable data on his expeditions to the volcanic regions of WyomingMontana, and Utah inthe United States. The results of these researches were published in several books: Geological Sketch at Home and Abroad (1882)and The Ancient Volcanoes of Great Britain (1897).He was a prolific scientific author, wrote several biographies, and his book Founders of Geology consists of the inaugural course of lectures given in 1897 at John Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. He received a knighthood in 1891 and was elected President of the Royal Society(1909). His handwriting is bold and the card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.   #12566ZBI
