John Simon Guggenheim (1867-1941) lived with his wife in Denver, Colorado where his worked as chief ore buyer for his father's mining and smelting business. He later became a Republican senator for Colorado (1907-1913) after which he moved to New York and eventually became president of American Smelting and Refining Company. Upon the death of his son in 1922 he established the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation which each year grants the Guggenheim Fellowships for international study.
