SIDNEY JAMES WEBB,1st Baron Passfield (1859-1947) SIGNED QUOTE, “Sidney Webb, 9.12.22”, on a card 4.5 x 3, by the English social reformer, and a leading Fabian Socialist (the British socialist organization whose purpose was to advance the principles of democratic socialism via gradualist and reformist effort in democracies, rather than by revolutionary overthrow), a historian of social and economic institutions, founder of the London School of Economics and Political Science (1895), and cabinet minister. He was a lawyer, a Member of Parliament, and in 1929 he was created 1st Baron Passfield and served as Secretary of State for the Colonies. He was a prolific author who wrote on poverty in London, the eight hour day, land nationalization, the nature of socialism, education, eugenics, and reform of the House of Lords. Sidney and Beatrice wrote together on a large number of publications, including History of Trade Unionism; Industrial Democracy; English Local Government, etc. His handwritten quote, in full: “Law is the Mother of Freedom”.
