DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR HE IS MOST FAMOUS FOR HIS DESTRUCTION OF THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY IN 1864, CALLED “THE BURNING” BY ITS RESIDENTS. IN 1865, HIS CAVALRY PURSUED GEN. ROBERT E. LEE AND WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN FORCING HIS SURRENDER AT APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE. HERE HE TWICE HAND-SIGNS AN EXTREMELY RARE CABINET PHOTO. PSA/DNA

General/USA/Chicago Oct 11th, 1881” on the reverse. The photo is by H. Rocher of Chicago. In fine condition. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
