TWO UNION GENERALS, ONE AT THE SURRENDER OF ROBERT E. LEE AT APPOMATTOX COURT HOUSE, 1865
General George Foster Shepley (1819 – 1878) Signed Slip, "G. F. Shepley, Brig Genl U. S. Vol", 4.25 x 3, in ink on one side slip, was a lawyer and politician in Maine, an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, after the capture of New Orleans he was made military governor of Louisiana (18th LA Gov), military governor of Richmond, Virginia and with the Army of the James was present at Appomattox Court House at the surrender of the General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. After the war he was appointed as a Circuit Court Judge for the state of Maine.
ALPHEUS STARKEY WILLIAMS (1810-78) SIGNED SLIP, “A. S. Williams, Bvt. Major Genl”, on the other side of 4.25 x 3 slip, was a lawyer, judge, journalist, U. S. Congressman from Michigan, and a Union general in the American Civil War, who fought in many important battles. Both ink signatures and ranks are in fine condition, with minor age toning.
