HE WAS AN AMERICAN ENGINEER AND INVENTOR OF THE COMPOUND STEAM LOCOMOTIVE THAT CHANGED THE FACE OF THE RAILROAD INDUSTRY, AND WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL FOR ARMING THE UNITED STATES ARMY DURING WWI

SAMUEL MATTHEWS VAUCLAIN (1856-1940) SIGNED QUOTE, “S. M. Vauclain”, on a card 4.25 x 2.75, by the American engineer, inventor of the Vauclain compound locomotive (steam locomotive powered by a compound engine), and president of the Baldwin Locomotive Works (for decades the worlds largest producer of steam locomotives). Baldwin was an important contributor to the Allied war effort in WW1. They built locomotives for the Allies including separate designs for Russian, French, British, and the United States trench railways. They build railway gun carriages for the U. S. Navy and manufactured artillery shells and Enfield rifles for the Allied effort. His short handwritten quote, in full: “Cheer up”. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
