CLASSICAL SCHOLAR HANDWRITES AND BOLDLY SIGNS A DEMOSTHENES QUOTE: “…SHAPE THEIR FUTURE BY THE NOBLEST CHAPTERS OF THEIR PAST”
SAMUEL HENRY BUTCHER (1850-1910) SIGNED DEMOSTHENES QUOTE, “S. H. Butcher”, on a card 4.75 x 3, by the Anglo-Irish classical scholar and politician; he was a professor of Greek at the University of Edinburgh and a Member of Parliament for Cambridge from 1906 until his death. His many publications included, in collaboration with Andrew Lang, a prose translation of Homers Odyssey (1879) and an edition of Demosthenes, Orationes Vol 1 & 2. He also wrote Some Aspects of the Greek Genius (1891) and Aristotle’s Theory of Poetry and Fine Art (1879). His handwritten quote, in full: “Communities like individuals should always strive to shape their future by the noblest chapters of their past – Demosthenes”. He was president of the British Academy (1909-10).The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
