RUDOLFO AMEDEO LANCIANI (1845-1929) SIGNED QUOTE, “Prof. Rudolfo Lanciani”, on a card 4 x 2.5, April 12, 1906, Rome, by the Italian archaeologist and pioneering student of ancient Roman topography, who was involved in many excavations, including the “House of the Vestals” in the Roman Forum, and who produced a map of the ancient city of Rome. On his death he willed his huge collection of documents, images & material related to Rome’s history, to the National Institute of Archaeology & Art History in Rome. His handwritten quote, in full: “Oh Rome my country! city of the soul!/The orphans of the heart must turn to thee/Lone mother of dead empires! and control/In their shut breast their petty misery. (Byron)” Professor Lanciani is quoting from Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1812-18). This exceptional handwritten quote is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
