Reviewing the work of Robert Kipniss, Time magazine noted: “In the twilight zone between recollection and imagination, a New York painter has found a vista of mind and mood that he calls ‘the Inner Landscape.’” Still life’s and landscapes are constantly reworked—redreamed—emerging with all incidental detail removed, their images softened and misted. The result is a vision both poetic and universal; in the artist’s own words, viewers “rediscover half-conscious feelings of their own which make these unreal places seem surprisingly familiar.”
Born in 1931, he was granted his first one-man show at 20, and his works are now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Boston MFA, the Smithsonian, Washington’s Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Whitney Museum, among many. He spent many years making lithographs from stone, aluminum, and Mylar plastic. He then switched to pre-rocked mezzotint plates of copper which create his signature soft, dreamy images. “Kipniss uses black and white or very muted colors in his landscapes. This makes it possible for the viewer to receive the emotional effect in a similar abstract manner.
His light is not the dramatic moment of a spectacular sundown, but the stranger moment of gloaming or twilight, that moment when the light has already drained the earth of color, the moment of uncertain feelings.” Kipniss deals not only with form in its most abstract generality but also with color in its most abstract generality – things black, white and gray.
