Robert Hofstadter (1915-90) Typed Letter Signed, "R. Hofstadter", 8 x 9.5, on "Stanford University, Department of Physics" letterhead, March 20, 1962, to Mr. Hans P. Nielsen, Brooklyn, NY, thanking him for letter of congratulation and sending his autograph, by the American physicist who was the joint winner of the 1961 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his pioneering studies of electron scattering in atomic nuclei and for his consequent discoveries concerning the structure of nucleons". Hofstadter taught at Stanford from 1950 to 1985. The Big Bang Theory popular TV sitcom supposedly named one of its main characters, Leonard Hofstadter, after Hofstadter.
