BEFORE COMMANDING THE ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ROBERT E. LEE SPENT 26 YEARS SERVING IN THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS
ROBERT E. LEE PARTIAL DOCUMENT SIGNED, "R. E. Lee Capt Engrs", 2 pgs, 8 x 2, 1838, by the future Confederate General who is here acting as the supervising engineer for navigation on the Mississippi River based in St. Louis, Missouri. Here he oversaw work on the St. Louis Harbor, the Missouri River, and the creation of a channel through the Des Moines Rapids near Keokuk, Iowa. For his efforts, he received a captain's commission. This partly printed document has some emendations in ink, certifying "That the expenditure within charged has been made, was necessary for, and has been or will be applied, for the objects within stated, to the improvement of the Mississippi, above the Mouth of the Ohio." The verso of the document is made out to Joshua B. Gams. It comes with a 6.5 x 9 vintage engraving of Lee. Both items in fine condition, with minor age toning and a few tiny foxing spots.
