HE RECEIVED THE NOBEL PRIZE IN 1923 IN RECOGNITION OF TWO MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS: MEASURING THE CHARGE OF THE ELECTRON IN HIS FAMOUS OIL-DROP EXPERIMENT AND PROVED THE PHOTO ELECTRIC THEORY THUS VERIFYING EINSTEIN’S PARTICLE THEORY OF LIGHT

ROBERT ANDREWS MILLIKAN (1868-1953) SIGNED CARD, “R. A. Millikan”, on a card 4.25 x 3.5, by the American experimental physicist honored by the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1923 for the measurement of the elementary electric charge and for his work on the photo electric effect. He was a professor of physics at the University of Chicago (1896-1921) and then became director of the Norman Bridge Laboratory of Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California where he undertook the study of radiation from outer space, which he named “cosmic rays”. He also served as chairman of the Executive Council of Caltech (1921-1945) and helped turn the school into one of the leading research institutions in the United States. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning and the date, “Nov. 23, 1923”, in another hand on the lower left.
