HE WAS THE FOUNDER AND FIRST SECRETARY OF THE AMERICAN ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION, FOUNDER AND SECRETARY OF THE CHRISTIAN SOCIAL UNION, WHICH ADVOCATED THE APPLICATION OF CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES TO THE SOCIAL PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD, AND THE AUTHOR OF A SERIES OF WIDELY READ BOOKS ON THE ORGANIZED LABOR MOVEMENT, SOCIALISM, AND OTHER SOCIAL ISSUES. HE WAS KNOWN AS THE “FATHER OF LAND ECONOMICS”.

RICHARD THEODORE ELY (1854-1943) SIGNED CARD, “Sincerely Yours, Richard T. Ely, Madison, Wis., Dec. 20, 1904”, on a card 4 x 2.5, by the American economist, author, and leader of the Progressive movement who called for more government intervention to reform what they perceived as the injustices of capitalism, especially regarding factory conditions, compulsory education, child labor, and labor unions. He was opposed to Socialism. He favored eugenics, arguing that the unfit should be kept from reproduction. He also favored redlining (racial segregation and discrimination in real estate). He was professor of Political Economy and director of the School of Economics, Political Science, and History at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
