MAURICE BLOOMFIELD (1855-1928) SIGNED QUOTE, “Maurice Bloomfield”, on a card 4.5 x 2.25, Jan. 10, 1908, by the Austrian-born American philologist (someone who studies the history of languages) and Sanskrit (the primary sacred language of Hinduism) scholar, known for his interpretations of the Vedas (the most ancient Hindu scriptures), author of Cerberus, the Dog of Hades (1905) and The Religion of the Veda (1908). His handwritten quote, in full: “…And some have greatness thrust upon them.” Some powerful words by William Shakespeare that have been interpreted to mean that to have greatness thrust upon you doesn’t mean you accidentally become great; it means that you were put in a situation that required greatness to succeed, and you met it. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
