MARTHA J. LAMB (1829-93) SIGNED SLIP, "Yours Very Truly, Martha J. Lamb", 4.5 x 1, by the American author, editor, and historian. After the Civil War she moved to New York City and wrote articles on a wide array of subjects for Harper’s and other periodicals. She realized that history was her true calling and she began extensive research for History of the City of New York: it’s Origin, Rise, and Progress. In 1883 she purchased the Magazine of American History, a financially struggling monthly founded in 1877. Lamb was a fixture in New York social circles and was twice invited to the White House.
