Marian Anderson [1897 1993] was an African-American contralto who sang both operas and spirituals and one of the most celebrated singers of the twentieth century who became an important figure in the struggle for black artists to overcome racial prejudice in the United States. Anderson worked as a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee as a ''goodwill ambassadress'' for the United States Department of State, giving concerts all over the world and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963. She was the first black performer to debut with New York's Metropolitan Opera (1955) and later became a permanent member of the company. $125 #10788
