HE GAVE ALL HIS DISCOVERIES NOT ONLY TO THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT BUT TO HUMANITY AND EXHIBITED THE CREATIVE CHARACTER IN VIRTUE OF WHICH CHEMISTRY ACTUALLY REALIZES THE ABSTRACT CONCEPTIONS OF ITS THEORIES AND CLASSIFICATIONS AND HIS INCREDIBLE HANDWRITTEN STATEMENT HERE SUMMARIZES HIS LIFE
PIERRE EUGENE MARCELLIN BERTHELOT (1827-1907) SIGNED QUOTE, “M. Berthelot”, on a card 4.25 x 2.5, by the French chemist and politician, noted for the Thomsen-Berthelot principle of thermochemistry, who synthesized many organic compounds from inorganic substances, and was convinced that chemical synthesis would revolutionize the food industry, and that synthesized foods would replace farms and pastures. Today synthesized food is becoming a larger part of our diets. Truth is, our bodies can’t tell the difference between a plant-based nutrient and an identical synthesized molecule made in a lab. By Berthelot’s synthetic production of numerous hydrocarbons, sugars, fats, and other bodies he proved that organic compounds can be formed by ordinary methods of chemical manipulation and obey the same principles as inorganic substances, thus exhibiting the creative character in virtue of which chemistry actually realizes the abstract conceptions of its theories and classifications. His investigations on the synthesis of organic compounds were published in numerous papers and books. During his later life he researched and wrote books on the early history of chemistry. Berthelot’s handwritten and signed quotation in French, translated in full, seems to summarize his life: “Old age sees the death of all those that she loves. She is buried in the ruins of her affections. She finds consolation in a noble feeling of having fulfilled her duty to her fellow man, and of having helped Humanity’s eternal quest with all her sympathy. Towards the truth, the good, towards the ideal!” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
