She made her speaking debut as Julia in The Soldier's Daughter at the Chambers Street Theatre in 1851. The parts in which she earned the greatest fame were Jane Eyre, Mignon, Little Barefoot, and Fanchon the Cricket She is the mother of Julian Bugher Mitchell the Broadway producer. She was a Confederate sympathizer during the American Civil War and was with Jefferson Davis in February 1861. During his inauguration as the Confederacy's President, she performed her signature dance on an American flag. She also dated the actorand Lincoln assassin, John Wilkes Booth.Her photograph was found in Booth’s wallet when he was shot after beinpursued for the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
