ON OCTOBER 20, 1944, THREE WEEKS AFTER THE DATE OF THIS WWII DATED COVER HONORING THE PHILIPPINES, GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR, GENERAL OF THE ARMY FOR THE UNITED STATES, AS WELL AS A FIELD MARSHAL TO THE PHILIPPINE ARMY, WOULD WADE ASHORE AND MAKE HIS FAMOUS REMARKS: “PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES, I HAVE RETURNED. BY THE GRACE OF ALMIGHTY GOD OUR FORCES STAND AGAIN ON PHILIPPINE SOIL – SOIL CONSECRATED IN THE BLOOD OF OUR TWO PEOPLES.” IN ADDITION, NOTATIONS ON THE REVERSE OF THIS COVER RELATES TO HIS LATER POSITION AS COMMANDER OF THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT HISTORIC FIND THAT TIES TOGETHER GENERAL MACARTHUR IN BOTH WAR AND PEACE.
GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR (1880-1964) SIGNED WAR-DATE FIRST DAY COVER, “Douglas MacArthur”, 6.5 X 3.5, postmarked Sept 27, 1944, honoring the occupied Philippines and its President Manuel L. Quezon, boldly signed at the top by the American General who commanded the Southwest Pacific in WWII, a role that earned him the Medal of Honor. The following year he was appointed by President Harry Truman as Commander of the Japanese occupation on Victory Over Japan, or V-J Day, May 14, 1945 which marked the end of WWII. He oversaw the occupation of Japan from 1945-1951. There is a typed notation on the reverse: “This cover was autographed by General Douglas MacArthur, in Tokyo, April 20, 1946.” It’s a significant WWII find and is in fine condition and comes with a Beckett Letter of Authenticity.
