Description

HE IS CALLED THE FATHER OF MODERN SURGERY: HIS OBSERVATIONS, DEDUCTIONS, AND PRACTICES REVOLUTIONIZED SURGERY THROUGHOUT THE WORLD

JOSEPH LISTER (1827-1912) SIGNED CARD, “Lister/ 26 Jan 1904”, on a card 4 x 2, by the British surgeon, experimental pathologist, and pioneer of antiseptic surgery. He found a way to prevent infections in wounds during and after surgery. His Antisepsis System is the basis of modern infection control. In 1860 he became professor of surgery at the University of Glasgow and became aware of a paper published by Louis Pasteur regarding the presence of micro-organisms in food that led to spoilage. Lister applied the ideas to develop antiseptic techniques to human wounds and on 12 August 1865 he achieved success by using carbolic acid to disinfect a compound fracture. As the germ theory of disease became more understood, it was realized that infection could be better avoided by preventing bacteria from getting into wounds in the first place. This led to the rise of antiseptic surgery. He accepted the Chair in Clinical Surgery at Kings College Hospital. He was appointed as the senior surgeon to Queen Victoria and after her death he was reappointed as such to her successor, King Edward VII. The boldly signed and dated card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
