Description
SIR JOHN WILLIAM DAWSON (1820-99) SIGNED CARD, “J. Wm. Dawson/Montreal, Canada”, on a card 3.25 x 2.25, by the Canadian geologist and paleontologist who was professor of geology and principal of McGill University (1855-93) in Montreal and the author of his classic Acadian Geology (1855). He is one of the founders of the science of palaeobotany and later described the fossil plants for the Geological Survey of Canada (1871-73). He was a Creationist who spoke against Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and wrote several books where he discussed how science and religion were complementary. And, in his books on geological subjects he maintained a distinctly theological attitude. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
