HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LEADERS IN THE EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENTIFIC BOTANY IN THE 19TH CENTURY AMERICA AND THE TORREY BOTANICAL SOCIETY, THE OLDEST BOTANICAL SOCIETY IN THE AMERICAS, WAS STARTED BY COLLEAGUES OF JOHN TORREY, AND CELEBRATED ITS 150TH BIRTHDAY IN 2017.
JOHN TORREY (1796-1873) SIGNED CARD, “Yours truly John
Torrey”, on a card 3.75 x 1.75, by the American botanist, chemist, and physician who was a teacher of chemistry, often at multiple universities, while he also pursued botanical work, focusing on the flora of North America. His most renowned works include studies of the New York flora, the Mexican boundary, the Pacific railroad surveys, and the uncompleted Flora of North America. In 1817, he was one of the founders of one of the oldest scientific societies in the United States, now the New York Academy of Science. He was acting professor of chemistry and geology at West Point Military Academy (1824-27) and in 1827 he became professor of chemistry and botany at the medical school of Columbia University. His bibliography is extensive, including contributions on botanical subjects to scientific periodicals. The card is in fine condition, with minor aging spots.
