The Theatre du Chatelet is a theatre and opera house, located in the Place du Chatelet in the 1st arrondissement of Paris France. Sargent studied art in Florence and then in 1874 entered the Paris studio of the portrait painter Carolus Duran. He soon established for himself a leading position among the younger Paris artists and expected to remain in France for life. However in 1884 his daring portrait of Madame Gautrau ("Madame X") aroused such controversy at the Paris Salon that he decided to settle in London, taking up residence in Whistler's former home and studio in Tite Street, Chelsea. In fine condition, with minor age toning.
