HIS INVENTION WAS REFERRED TO AS THE “INCLINED ELEVATOR”, WHICH WAS INTRODUCED AS AN AMUSEMENT RIDE AT THE OLD IRON PIER, CONEY ISLAND. THE FIRST RETAIL APPLICATION OF THE DEVICE IN THE U.S. WAS THE ESCALATOR SYSTEM INCORPORATED INTO THE NEW YORK BLOOMINGDALE BROS. STORE IN 1898. HE EVENTUALLY BUILD FUNCTIONING ESCALATORS FOR SEVERAL AMERICAN SUBWAY SYSTEMS. HE SOLD HIS COMPANY TO OTIS ELEVATOR COMPANY IN 1911.

JESSE WILFORD RENO (1861-1947) SIGNED QUOTE, “J. W. Reno”, on a card 4.25 x 3.5, by the American inventor and engineer who invented the first working escalator in 1891 and was used at the Old Iron Pier, Coney Island as an amusement ride, and also suggested a use for his device that is now standard practice: using one escalator to transport people up and another to bring people back down. In 1911 his company was purchased by Otis Elevator Company. He also invented a submersible vehicle for salvaging shipwrecks and an early aircraft carrier. He was the son of American Civil War General Jesse Lee Reno. His handwritten quote, in full: “Am too old to be sentimental.” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning and the date “N.Y., 21, VI, 1926” written in another hand, upper left.
