JAMES HALL (PALEONTOLOGIST) 1811-1898 SIGNED CARD, “Colonel Ashley W. Cole/With the respect of James Hall”, on a card5.5 x 1.5, by the American geologist and invertebrate paleontologist who was a noted authority on stratigraphy, had an influential role in the development of paleontology in the United States, and was a major contributor to the geosynclinal theory of mountain building. He was the first state paleontologist of New York and built a laboratory in Albany, NY which became an important center of study and training for aspiring geologist and paleontologist. Later he was made the director of the New York Museum of Natural History in Albany. Between1847-1894 he published 13 volumes of The Paleontology of New York, his principle contribution in the field. The card is in fine condition and has a large, bold signature, with minor age toning.
