JAMES CARDINAL GIBBONS HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED, "James Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore", 5.5 x 9, Jan 2, 1880, on Archbishop of Baltimore letterhead, by the second man in the U.S. to be made Cardinal and the author of the best selling THE FAITH OF OUR FATHERS. In full: "Rev. Sir: I am happy to comply with your request, and am yours very respectfully in XP [the letters XP are often use as the symbol for Christ]." In fine condition attached to an album page, with age toning and a few minor stains, the number "1." written in another hand upper left. 

James Gibbons (1834-1921) was an American prelate, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Baltimore from 1877 until his death. In 1886 he became the second man from the United States to be made a cardinal. He served as Cardinal-Priest for Santa Maria in Trastevere basilica in Rome. In 1876 Gibbons published The Faith of Our Fathers: A Plain Exposition and Vindication of the Church Founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ which became a best-selling conversion manual in the United States and as of 1980 is in its 111th printing and is still considered "the best exposition of Catholic doctrine." Gibbons was among the founders, and served as the first Chancellor of the Catholic University of America. He is also famous for his support of the labor movement in the United States.
