This led to a tremendous change in man's way of life...This growth of population within fixed areas caused human beings to huddle together into villages...as farmers organized they built walls about their towns...walled towns developed into cities...what we call 'civilization' was born. With civilization, there came a new necessity, that of measuring...City walls, temples, palaces, aqueducts, all needed accurate measurements...The Egyptian pyramids and the Greek temples show signs that the most delicate measurements were involved in their building...."
