DR. REMSEN DISCOVERED THE SWEETENER SACCHARIN AND ESTABLISHED REMSEN’S LAW ON THE PREVENTION OF OXIDATION IN METHYL AND OTHER GROUPS
IRA REMSEN (1846-1927) SIGNED QUOTE, “Ira Remsen”, on a card 4 x 2.5, by the American chemist who co-discovered the sweetener saccharin and was the second president of Johns Hopkins University and help establish the school as a research university. He wrote the popular text Theoretical Chemistry and soon became one of the original faculty at Johns Hopkins University, where he founded the department of chemistry. He also founded the American Chemical Journal and edited it for over 35 years. His handwritten quote, in full: “Being asked for a sentiment I reply that I am not a sentimental person.” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning and the date, “1904” written in another hand at lower left.
