HERMANN VOLRATH HILPRECHT (1859-1925) SIGNED QUOTE, “H. V. Hilprecht”, on a card 4 x 2.25, by the German-American Assyriologist and archaeologist who in 1887 became the first curator of the Semitic department of the University of Pennsylvania and participated in the first campaign of excavations at Nippur, the ancient Sumerian city that was the special seat of the worship of the Sumerian god Enlil, the “Lord Wind”, ruler of the cosmos, subject to An alone. After discovery of the Temple Library of Nippur he became involved in a controversy with the former expedition director, John Punnett Peters, over who should get credit for the discovery. His one word quote: “Duty!” The card is dated, 1907, in another hand on the lower left. In fine condition, with minor age toning, and a light crease along bottom edge.
