Henry Smith Lane (1811-81) was a United States Representative, Civil War Senator, and the 13th Governor of Indiana (1861); he was by design the shortest-serving Governor of Indiana (2 days), having made plans to resign the office should his party take control of the Indiana General Assembly and elect him to the United States Senate.  He also organized the 1st Indiana Volunteer Regiment for the Mexican War, rising to the rank of colonel
