Historically, Fish has been praised for his calm demeanor under pressure, honesty, loyalty, modesty, and for his talented statesmanship during his tenure under President Grant, briefly serving under President Hayes. Prior to his position as Grant's Secretary of State, he supported Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War and was an integral part of his presidential commission that made successful arrangements for Union and Confederate troop prisoner exchanges.
