IN 1873-74 HE DISCOVERED ONE OF THE OLDEST MEDICAL DOCUMENTS IN THE WORLD, THE EBERS PAPYRUS, A 110-PAGE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN SCROLL THAT CONTAINS SOME 700 MAGICAL FORMULAS AND FOLK REMEDIES, A TREATISE ON THE HEART, MENTAL DISORDERS, BONE SETTING, ETC.
GEORG MORITZ EBERS (1837-97) SIGNED QUOTE, “Georg Ebers”, on a card 3.75 x 3, by the German Egyptologist and novelist who is best known for his discovery and purchase, in Luxor, Egypt, of the Ebers Papyrus, one of the oldest Egyptian medical documents in the world. It was a compilation of medical texts dated about 1550 B.C. Ebers held the chair of Egyptology at the University of Leipzig and on his retirement the papyrus remained at the university library. As a novelist he conceived the idea, to great success, of popularizing Egyptian lore by means of historical romances and later to other fields of historical fiction. His other writings include a descriptive work on Egypt and a biography of his teacher, Egyptologist Karl Richard Lepsius. His handwritten quote in German, translated in full: “Wait for life.” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
