GENERAL NATHANIEL P BANKS SIGNED SLIP, CIVIL WAR, GOV OF MASS, CONGRESSMAN

$125.00

Description

GENERAL NATHANIEL P BANKS (1816-94) SIGNED NAME AND RANK,"N. P. Banks, M. G. C.", 4.5 X 1.5, was first elected to Congress as a Democrat in 1852, then re-elected on the American Party ("Know Nothing") ticket and again as a Republican. He was Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives (1856-1857) and Governor of Massachusetts (1858-1861). During the Civil War, this adroit politician proved an inept Union major general, whipped repeatedly by Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley campaigns of 1862, and embarrassed again in the Red River Campaign of 1864. After the war, he served several nonconsecutive terms in Congress through 1891. He was a progressive legislator, an early advocate of women's suffrage. This large, bold, ink signature and rank is in fine condition, mounted to a piece of an album page.
