GENERAL JOHN GRAY FOSTER (1823-74) SIGNED SLIP, "J. G. Foster, Maj. Genl. Comd'g", 3 x 1.25, was West Point graduate, American military officer in Mexican-American War (severely wounded at Battle of Molino del Rey) and the U.S. Civil War. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was chief engineer of the fortifications of Charleston Harbor and was at Fort Sumter during the bombardment that started the war. He took a leading part in the capture of Roanoke Island, was with Burnside at Battle of Knoxville and later in command of the Army and Department of Ohio until injured again when his horse fell with him. In fine condition, mounted to a piece of an album page and minor age toning.
