ONE OF GERMANY’S MOST FORCEFUL POPULARIZERS OF SCIENCE
ERNST HAECKEL (1834-1919) HANDWRITTEN GOETHE QUOTE SIGNED, “Ernst Haeckel/Jena”, on a 4.75 x 3 card, by the German zoologist, naturalist, eugenicist, philosopher, physician, professor, marine biologist, and artist who discovered, described, and named thousand of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms and coined many terms in biology, including ecology, phylum, and phylogeny. The published artwork of Haeckel includes over 100 detailed, multi-color illustrations of animals and sea creatures, collected in his “Art Forms of Nature”. As a philosopher he wrote “The Riddle of the Universe”; and “Freedom in Science and Teaching” to support teaching of evolution. The Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) quote, in full (translated): “Whom does luck award the finest prize?
